What is Respiratory Medicine?
Respiratory medicine is a specialty dealing with diseases involving the upper and lower respiratory tract, the lungs itself, the chest cavity and the muscles involved in breathing. Conditions include but are not limited to asthma, emphysema, COPD, bronchiectasis, pulmonary fibrosis, interstitial lung disease, chest infections, lung cancer, pleural effusion, pulmonary embolism, pulmonary arterial hypertension, chronic cough and breathlessness.
What to Expect?
At your initial consultation, Dr Wu will begin the diagnostic process with a questionnaire, which is a general review focusing on your general medical health, medication history, hereditary diseases affecting the lungs, exposure to toxins (e.g. tobacco smoke, asbestos, dust, chemicals), infectious agents or allergens (e.g. certain types of birds). If you would like to answer this patient questionnaire in advance, please download and complete it and bring it with you to your initial consultation with Dr Wu. Make sure you also bring to your initial consultation any old chest X-rays, CT chest scans and blood test results you may have.
You will have a thorough physical examination, including measurements of your oxygen level. If necessary, Dr Wu will also perform a bedside breathing test on you called spirometry, which is a breathing test measuring lung function, specifically testing the amount (volume) of air that can be blown out and the speed (flow) of air that can be inhaled and exhaled.
Based on the information you give to Dr Wu during the consultation, the results of the physical examination and breathing test, if one was performed, Dr Wu will discuss with you his investigation plans to obtain the correct diagnosis, prescribe the best therapy and institute the most appropriate management plan. This may include but not limited to investigations such as CT scan, X-Ray, ultrasounds, pulmonary function test (detailed breathing test performed in a laboratory) and blood tests. If you require a procedure to be performed, Dr Wu will also discuss this with you (please see below). After you have completed the investigations, a follow up appointment with Dr Wu will be organized for you to discuss the results, diagnoses and a detailed management plan.
